In 1954 the world cup stadium Hannover, former called Niedersachsenstadium was opened.
The first international match was Germany vs. France. The soccer team of France won the match with 3:1. The stadium was completely full with almost 90,000 spectators – but 500,000 requests for tickets were listed.
In 1972 the world cup stadium Hannover was renovated the first time for the coming soccer world cup 1974 in Germany. The costs were 26 millions German Mark.
During the soccer world cup 1974 four matches took place in the renovated stadium. Among others Brasilia and the Netherlands fought in exciting matches for the world cup.
In 1982 the first music open air took place in the world cup stadium 2006 Hannover. The Rolling Stones showed their gigantic live performance in front of tenthousands of enthusiastic people.
2003 a further renovation with costs of 63 millions Euros had begun. The aim was to get fit for the soccer world cup 2006 in Germany. The renovated stadium has 49,000 seats and a new roof.
